Authors & illustrators - in this program, unique to Assistance League of Glendale, 2098 students in four elementary schools welcomed childrens book authors or illustrators. The presenters shared how they started writing or illustrating books and how their manuscripts were marked in red by editors. The children learned that they are not the only ones who must rewrite their work to improve it. Often, presenters start a story with the children, outline a character, give them a problem to solve, and then leave the story unfinished for students to complete in class. This fits well with the schools common core standards. Also, each school received $2,500 to buy new books for their library.
