Program areas at Barrio Dogs

Our Barrio Dogs Fixit Program has served almost 5,600 pets in Houston's East End since 2013. We sponsor free spay neuter surgeries, vaccinations and microchip as well as emergency care for pet owners who lack these resources and access to vet care. In addition, we have a Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program that addresses the feline overpopulation. Our community outreach events are essential in spreading awareness and providing pet owners with additional resources like healthy pet food, leashes and educational literature in English and Spanish. We feel this is a great way to provide solutions for our underserved community and address the animal overpopulation that will benefit our pets and the residents.
Neighborhood Advocates helps residents become leaders for the animals and the community by working with neighbors and civic associations to raise awareness of animal welfare issues around them. We assist and encourage people to speak out to their elected officials about these issues and in the process, build momentum for much-needed change.
Our Barrio Dogs Youth & Paws program (YAP) teaches children compassion and respect for our animals. The program goes into area schools and community centers to teach young children about animals, often with a therapy dog to demonstrate proper pet care. We feel teaching young students the importance of proper pet care, and especially to spay neuter their pets, is key to helping them be better pet owners in the future. This program is a key investment with our youth and a great way to help create a more pet-friendly future.
