the junior league program provides equipment, coaches, and organized competitions to nyc middle schools to create and improve Wrestling programs. Junior league student-athletes learn how to be self-reliant and work on a team, improve their fitness and develop basic Wrestling skills. the program supports 30 middle school teams, offering programs to first through eighth graders. In the 2022-2023 season, there were 444 junior league participants, 138 of whom were girls and 25 teams. There is a strong emphasis on continuing to accrue the benefits of an athletic career in high school, serving as a feeder program for high school-level public school athletic league (psal) Wrestling programs.
the Beat the Streets ("bts") academy is a comprehensive program geared to providing our most engaged student-athletes with a dynamic and holistic experience throughout the school year. Academy members will not only learn valuable Wrestling skills from bts staff-coaches but more importantly, the academic, social, and emotional skills that they need to succeed in life. the program runs throughout the school year and is centered around monthly academy days and features an annual career day and various fun, social activities. the academy is a pipeline in which our 6-8th grade student-athletes matriculate into 9-12th grade high school Wrestling within the public schools athletic league (psal). There are approximately 20 middle school and 50 high school student-athletes in this program. the academy is made up of 50% male and 50% female participants from all five boroughs. the junior league academy is made up of 70% male and 30% female participants from all five boroughs.in our fourth year, the academy had a 100% graduation and college/military entrance rate for participating high school seniors. 100% of participants increased in at least one social emotional learning capacity such as self-confidence, community, self-management, etc. Our student-athletes also succeeded on the Wrestling mat with over 20 state placers in the boys and girls folkstyle state championships.bts sends student-athletes to local, regional, and national competitions. By fully funding competition and travel, bts youth from low-income backgrounds can compete.
the training center program provides year-round training opportunities in 2022-2023. the training center is open to all students from k-12th grade, with practices offered at least four days per week. In the 2022-2023 season, there were 1,528 registered student-athletes, 171 of whom were girls, attending our training centers. Through the training centers, student-athletes have access to local, regional, and national competition opportunities.
