Cervical Cancer Prevention Program VIAC at Karanda Mission Hospital grant provides $20,000.00 a year for 2017-2019. It supports cancer screening at Karanda Mission Hospital. The Karanda screening Program is overseen by Dr. Paul Thistle, Ob/Gyn. From Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2018, Karanda screened a total of x,.xxx women; a total of 90x women required treatment to prevent cervical cancer. [A portion of the Karanda cervical cancer prevention grantmoney also supported a study of the prevalence and subtype distribution of cervical high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) among women presenting for cervical cancer screening at Karanda. The study was led by Dr. Thistle, with assistance from BHA board member and oncologist Dr. Lowell Schnipper. Also, BHA coordinated a cancer education workshop for Karanda nurses, midwifes and other staff during our visit to the hospital in Sept. 2018. BHA also worked with Dr Thistle to produce a brochure for women in the community Women's Health. BHA helped write the content and paid to have an English version and Shona-lanquage version of the brochure printed. The brochures were hand carried to Karanda by an American medical student traveling to the hospital
