Program areas at Bikewalk North Carolina
The annual bike summit aims to provide information to and foster collaboration among a wide variety of stakeholders from across the state. The focus of the summit was on the economic benefits of walkable, bikeable community development. The event draws advocates, engineers, planners and interested participants working to improve cycling and walking across the state.
The governors highway safety program funded bicycle friendly driver program provides important information to help motorists safely co-exist with bicyclists and other vulnerable road users. Inspired by similar efforts in other states, this interactive workshop discusses: motorist driving habits that impact people who bike and pedistrians; explanation of common bicyclist practices; how to avoid common crashes between motorists and vulnerable road users; active transportation infrastructiure (bike lanes); and complete strets concepts.
Complete streets campaign is a state wide effort to communicate the benefits of complete streets. Complete streets provide multimodal transportation options that accommodate all users. The ongoing project provides education and information to members, government employees, state legislators, consultants in the transportation sector, and others on the benefits of active transportation (biking and walking) so that bicycle and pedestrian facilities are integrated into road planning and construction processes.
The nc bicycle safety quiz is an educational tool provided to the community to teach adults, children, motorists, and truck drivers how to share the road safely. The interactive quizzes cover safety techniques and relevant state laws using images and short explanations for each answer. The quiz is sponsored by aarp and was modified from one created by bikeillinois with their assistance. Traffic gardens, small-scale streetscapes designed for educational programming, provide the opportunity for bicycle skill-building and active fun. Bikewalk nc has collaborated with the town of winterville and other regional partners in this effort to repurpose a portion of winterville's hillcrest park parking lot. The traffic garden will feature customized professional design of internationally recognized traffic garden designer finnoula quinn. The traffic garden in hillcrest park will provide a regional resource for teaching pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists how to "safely coexist" on the road with each other. In addition to providing a resource for people of all ages to practice safety skills, the traffic garden also provides an opportunity for experienced cyclists, including those 50 or over, to lead trainings to younger community members.
