Black Women in Ecology Evolution and Marine Science aims to enhance opportunities for Black women to pursue careers in science, specifically in the fields of ecology, evolution, and marine science. The organization offers resources and mentoring to those interested in a career in these areas. In 2022, the organization launched programming for members and the community which involved numerous presentations and mentoring for dozens of students and young professionals.

Program areas at Black Women in Ecology Evolution and Marine Science

BWEEMS sponsored 49 participants to attend the Blacks in Marine Science conference in Norfolk, VA in November, 2023. At the conference, attendees were able to participate in professional development workshops, attend panel discussions on career paths and learn about mental health resources.
Community Meetings and Virtual Programming: Monthly community meetings and virtual programming were convened by BWEEMS to support participants. This included workshops and panels with different leaders who are able to support the career development of BWEEMS members.
Mentorship Program: More than 65 individuals participated in the BWEEMS mentorship program. This program is tasked with supporting BWEEMS participants y pairing mentors and mentees together and supporting them through their mentoring journey. This includes meetings every month which are both virtual and in person.
