Program areas at Blackpackers
Snow Sports Excursions - through a partnership with Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Blackpackers hosted 3 ski days, bringing a total of approximately 120 participants together for skiing lessons and fellowship.
Blackpackers hosted swimming lessons for approximately 9 members of area families. BIPOC individuals have historically been excluded from swimming pools and lessons, and as a result, have higher rates of drowning. Reducing inequities in outdoor recreation, including adverse outcomes, is a key goal of Blackpackers.
Blackpackers hosted 8 camping & backpacking events with a total of 140 participants. Connecting BIPOC individuals and families with public lands is a primary goal of Blackpackers. ED Patricia Cameron also participated in mountaineering training, increasing the safety and opportunities for participants.
Blackpackers continued a rock climbing program at a local rock climbing gym, serving approximately 50 total participants. Participants trained through the program were able to lead subsequent workshops, fulfilling an additional goal of Blackpackers to provide leadership opportunities within the community.
Blackpackers hosted a gear locker, making outdoor equipment available to area residents.
Executive Director Patricia Cameron backpacked the Pacific Crest Trail, increasing visibility of Black thru-hikers and increasing her own skills for training. She was able to write about her experieces in Backpackers magazine, increasing representation in national media.
Blackpackers established an Athlete Grant program, making funding available for BIPOC athletes needing support to buy equipment or pay travel costs for outdoor pursuits.
