BrasArte the Damasceno Brazilian Cultural Exchange has a mission to preserve traditional dances and music in Brazil, care for aging artists and mentors, nurture emerging artistic talent, and produce educational and community events. Its Ginga Brasil comparsa has been consistently parading in the San Francisco Carnaval Parade for 32 years. Through dance performances by adult and children's troupes, music concerts, open house events, community celebrations, and an annual Brazilian Day Festival, BrasArte engages with audiences ranging from 700 to 5000 people. BrasArte presented a comprehensive core program of classes and workshops in Brazilian, African, and Cuban dance and culture for adults and children. (1117 students served. 6151 student class visits)
Ewe Dance Retreat: In June 2023, BrasArte's Artistic Director Tainah Harvey led a week-long dance retreat to Bahia, Brazil where students enjoyed a unique cultural experience featuring music and dance workshops, cultural excursions, and Portuguese language instruction. (25 particpants
Producing educational and community events including dance performances by adult's and children's dance troupes. The 18th annual Yemanja Festival included 2 major dance performances and a workshop series in honor of the Yoruban goddess Yemanja. (500 served.) The Annual San Francisco Bay Brazilian Day & Lavagem Festival is a street festival that recreates the annual Lavagem de Bonfim festival in Salvador, Bahia. It features a procession and cleansing ceremony followed by a day-long festival of music and dance. (3000 served)
SF Carnaval Parade: BrasArte's 34th year leading a contingent of musicians and dancers in the annual parade. (250 participants)
Camp Ere for children, featuring Capoeira, Dance, Percussion, Arts & Crafts, Games, and Culture, was held June 5-9, 2023.
