Tobacco control: because smoking is the #1 preventable cause of death in the u.s., Breathe California offers programs to help smokers quit, keep kids off tobacco and raise awareness of its deadly effects. Breathe California also seeks to protect nonsmokers from the deadly effects of secondhand smoke by promoting and advocating for smoke-free policies.in fiscal year 2017-18 Breathe California, Golden Gate publichealth Partnership provided the following tobacco controlservices:-smoking cessation classes for adults-tobacco awareness presentations and smoking cessation workshops for youth-tobacco control educational presentations to community-based organizations-advocated to policy makers to urge them to adopt tobacco-free policies for their jurisdictions
Environmental health:indoor and ambient air quality advocacy85% of californians live in areas that do not meet healthy air quality standards. Spikes in air pollution levels can trigger chest pain, lung infections, asthma attacks, strokes and heart attacks. Being around air pollution for a long time can be even more harmful, raising the risk for many serious diseases, including lung cancer, heart disease and asthma. Additionally, with most people spending 80-90% of their time indoors, people with lung disease are particularly vulnerable to indoor air pollutants such as mold, dust, perfumes and chemicals. Breathe California works tirelessly to promote alternative use of transportation, clean energy technology and stronger air quality regulations to protect the Public from the Health risks posed by air pollution and climate change. Breathe California strives to reduce exposure to indoor air hazards through educational programs and policies that promote cleaner home, school and work environments. Breathe California seeks to protect nonsmokers from the deadly effects of secondhand smoke by promoting and advocating for smoke free policies.during 2017-18, Breathe California Golden Gate Public Health partnership:-participated in environment-focused coaltions-provided air pollution prevention programming to youth in contra costa, alameda, and san mateo counties-launched an air quality Public Health intership program
Community Health: since 1908, we have empowered individual, institutional and community change for better breathing and healthier living. Today lung disease is the 2nd leading and fastest rising cause of death in the usa. Keeping the Public informed of the impact of lung disease on their community, providing the Public with the most current information on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung disease, resources for promoting lung Health and managing lung disease, as well as access to Health care is essential to our mission.to inform the community of the causes of lung disease and how to promote lung Health, in 2017-2018 Breathe California Golden Gate Public Health partnership:-participated in Health & wellness-focused coaltions-participated in community Health fairs-maintained a referral webpage with information regarding lung Health, smoking cessation and air quality advocacy resources in each county we serve-utilized social media to share lung Health research and updates-sponsored a lung health/clean air film contest for bay area middle & high schools, community colleges/universities, and the general Public
Medical research: supported peer reviewed medical research to improve knowledge of the prevention and treatment of lung disease. This year we continued to dedicate funding to lung Health research.lung disease: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis. It is the 3rd leading and fastest rising cause of death in the usa. Breathe California offers patient education, advocacy and support groups to help improve the quality of life enjoyed by copd and emphysema patients.to assist people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) and their caregivers to better manage living with these disabling conditions Breathe California Golden Gate Public Health partnership:-co-hosted lectures, classes and support groups on copd-maintained a copd information and referral page on the Breathe California websitetuberculosis (tb) is an infectious bacterial disease characterized by the growth of nodules in the tissues, especially the lungs. Between 5-10% of the usa population is infected with tb. Breathe California offers awareness raising and referrals, and provides advocacy for prevention, care and treatment of tb.in 2017-18, to assist pepople living with tuberculosis and help prevent the spread of the disease, Breathe California Golden Gate Public Health partnership:-partnered with the ca tb controllers asssociation to raise Public awareness-developed a large-scale social media campaign for the world tb day-co-organized an "end tb" walk in san francisco with partner agencies-participated in the tb elimination coalitionasthma: asthma is the #1 chronic cause of school absenteeism and the 3rd leading cause of hospitalization among children each year, disproportionally affecting low income & communities of color and negatively impacting physical, emotional and social development. Over 5 million californians have been diagnosed with asthma at some point in their lives, and almost 3 million currently have asthma. One in 10 children in the bay area are estimated to have asthma. Breathe California offers asthma education to children, parents, caregivers and Health providers to help patients avoid exposure to asthmagens that may trigger an attack and to help them learn to take control of their condition.in 2017-18, Breathe California Golden Gate Public Health partnership:-trained parents & families, child care providers, school personnel, on recognizing and managing asthma in children ages 0-18-participated in community Health fairs to share asthma resources
