Program areas at Build Up
BUI's four sponsored projects implemented activities that are focused on improving the well-being of historically marginalized communities. The National Network of Consultants to Grantmakers (NNCG), an organization that operates as a network of consultants who work with grantmakers, provides an online platform where consultants can connect with grantmakers and other philanthropies seeking to hire consultants for specific needs. Obstetricians for Reproductive Justice (ORJ), a multicultural OBGYN-led organization that works to share the stories of the real-time harm happening to patients and providers in post-Roe America, amplified the stories of patients harmed by the abortion bans, created opportunities for doctor-led activism and engaged with various communities that needed education, resources, and funding. Lioness: Justice Impacted Alliance (JIWA) is an organization that is led by currently and formerly incarcerated girls and women in Texas with the purpose of ending the incarceration and systemic devaluing of girls and women within the Texas criminal legal system. Lioness: JIWA participated in various community events that edified and uplifted the voices of incarcerated women and girls. They also served as a point of contact and resource hub for incarcerated girls and women and those that were released from prison by directing them to other organizations to serve reentry needs. Lastly, IAmProSe is an organization whose vision is to eradicate and prevent domestic violence within the Black community. IAmProSe provided culturally competent methods to address domestic violence in the Black community for example, the organization built deep relationships within the Black church community in its city, strengthening its outreach capacity.
BUI provided fiscal sponsorship and capacity-building services to four projects. BUI offers two distinct models of fiscal sponsorship: Comprehensive (Model A) and pre-approved grant relationship (Model C). These models provide essential infrastructural support for projects at different stages of development. The comprehensive model integrates the project as a program within BUI, ensuring legal and fiduciary responsibilities are managed, which enables projects to focus on their mission. The pre-approved grant relationship model allows projects to remain independent while benefiting from BUI's financial management expertise. By offering these flexible options, BUI removes administrative burdens, allowing projects to concentrate on their core activities, expand their reach, and achieve greater impact. BUI provides tailored and culturally competent capacity-building services to its sponsored projects, including the full benefits of BUI's membership services, training catered to the ongoing needs of our sponsored projects and peer networks, our in-house library of resources, monthly strategic calls, and weekly office hours.
