Program areas at Building People Power
Although BPP was, and still is, in preconstruction phase with the vacant building, we were still holding monthly programming in the backlot of 4400 Telegraph for the first half of 2022. Despite not having public access to the inside of 4400 Telegraph, Critical Resistance; anchored by local Oakland community leader, Dania Cabello; held monthly events outside the building. Freedom Fridays is a monthly socially-distanced, and intergenerational event series at 4400 Telegraph Ave (in the back lot on 44th) where we put PIC abolition into practice. In collaboration with local partners, organizations, and volunteers, we amplify abolitionist campaigns and build bridges between movements happening inside prisons and the Oakland community. Between December 2020 and July 2022, Critical Resistance hosted over 17 Freedom Fridays, featuring dozens of movement partners, with over 1000 community members cycling through attendance.
