Program areas at Calhoun County Resource Watch

Blocking Harmful Industrial Projects: Through our legal efforts, an air permit for Max Midstream's Seahawk Terminal issued by the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality was overturned, preventing the release of an additional 91 tons per year of nitrogen oxides, 89 tons per year of carbon monoxide and 82 tons per year of volatile organic compounds. Monitoring Industrial Discharges: Our citizen-led efforts to monitor industrial outfalls and collect evidence of violations have been critical to holding polluters accountable. This includes continuing to enforce Formosa Plastics' zero-discharge agreement, resulting in a total of over $18 million in penalties for plastic pellet releases since 2019. Protecting Matagorda Bay: We stalled a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to dredge Matagorda Bay, which could have re-suspended toxic mercury pollution from the Alcoa Superfund site. Our actions forced the Corps to conduct a new environmental impact study before proceeding.
