Program areas at California Housing Defense Fund

Legal Assistance and EducationCalHDF pursued legal advocacy throughout the state aimed at ensuring a more abundant and equitable housing future for California. We engaged with cities through administrative and legal advocacy to ensure housing plans governing the next eight years were completed in compliance with state law, and would ensure production of housing for all income levels. We worked to make sure the consequences of failing to produce compliant housing plans were enforced on cities, including automatic approval of affordable housing developments. We monitored local actions throughout the state to ensure local compliance with state laws designed to facilitate the construction of accessory dwellings, duplexes, affordable and multifamily housing. Further, we examined local policies and plans to ensure they are designed as much as possible to further fair housing goals. All told, CalHDF advocacy ensured the development or protection of thousands of new homes in California, focused in historically exclusive areas close to jobs and opportunity.
