Program areas at Advocates for Camp Able Camp Able of Buffalo Gap
Shelter and care of equines (excluding training) - During 2022 Camp Able cared for a total of ninety equines, most of which were donated to Camp Able due to injury, age, lack of available riders or financial distress of owners. The goal is to use as many of these animals as possible in therapeutic horsemanship programs or place them in loving homes. Shelter and care expenses include feed, veterinary care, and farrier, along with all the supporting costs for personnel, transportation, equipment, facilities maintenance, physical shelter and supplies.
Training Program - This is a largely internal program to train horses, and is being developed. All horses must learn the basics, including being haltered, led and standing still. Additional and rigorous training to determine a horse's fitness as a therapy horse is critical.
Day Camps - Therapeutic horsemanship, including mounted and unmounted activities, and skills based training sessions for individuals, primarily school-aged children with special needs, military veterans and people with normal orientation. The objective of day camps is to promote self-sufficiency, as well as confidence, core balance, strength, and life skills.
