Program areas at Can Wigmunke
In the last 12 years, weve created over 20 community and/or school gardens, assisted over 25 disabled tribal new farmers start small scale , regenerative farms on the pine ridge reservation. In addition, weve hosted numerous educational workshops on regenerative agriculture and beginning farming. Weve presented at every school on the pine ridge reservation about topics ranging from basic gardening, permaculture, farm to school, dr jane goodalls roots and shoots service learning, positive youth leadership program, farmers markets. Weve provided badly needed donations of food, clothing and holiday meals from donations sent to us from across the united states. We work entirely with socially-disadvantaged youth, adults and elders on and around the pine ridge reservation in south dakota. Can Wigmunke has partnered with numerous organizations to bring additional educational outreach, badly needed resources and to start two regenerative farming tribal new farmer incubator hubs. Weve written numerous grants to bring additional resources to the communities, tribal farmers and youth of pine ridge. Weve also helped re-establish traditional native plants of cultural significance to the lakota people and culture and presented at numerous conferences across south dakota and the united states. We help with community gardens, educational workshops and activities and community clean-ups. We fight to protect the rights of indigenous peoples to protect their lands, waters, seeds and sovereignty.can Wigmunke has also assisted other tribal members,schools and organizations develop grant proposals and we are one of the key organizations leading the way in developing a local foods community foods system based on lakota cultural world view, in particular the re-establishment of traditional lakota plant foods and herbs, the use of high-tunnels and hoop houses to extend the growing season.
