Program areas at Caras Con Causa
Education Services: We continued to coordinate afterschool programs for underprivileged children to provide improved provisions of the education services. We served over several children and their families Monday through Thursday. We offer academic tutoring, arts, crafts, sports, mentoring,collegue prep,etc. Among our accomplishments is that all our students passed to the next level, awe provided more than 14,000 tutoring hours. Students surpassed the national average in reading and writing on the university admission exam for the first time in decades.
Community-Delivery of over 7,900 hot meals and more than 660 gallons of water distributed from Monday to Thursday to older individuals with health conditions in the Vietnam and Puente Blanco communities. Additionally, we deliver non-perishable food items and purified water. People have been identified during hurricane emergencies and/or floods, referred by other organizations, and referred by community leaders. Also, "Compartir con Causa" has been held monthly since November 2022. The purpose is for people over the age of 60 to get out of their homes and engage in recreational activities and workshops for emotional-spiritual healing through art, enjoyment, and laughter therapy. In addition The "Marcha por la Paz" is an annual activity that brings together all sectors of CataƱo and Northern Guaynabo, including communities, public residential areas, civic and faith-based groups, businesses, shops, both municipalities, and their departments. It is a proactive act to claim individual and collective peace to counteract violence in our communities and create a more just, sustainable, and peaceful society. The march has been held since 2019. This year it took place on Friday, March 24, 2023 and have over 1,000 attendees.
Ecology- With the raices urbanas project, we continued the nursery and planting several hundred trees with students in the neighborhood forest. More than 5,500 plants were propagated in 4 nurseries and transplanted more than 1,600 plants. This year, Urban Roots and the Community Laboratory provided educational interventions, using school nurseries as a 'living laboratory'. Students learned about plants, adaptations, and reforestation in gardens and the natural reserve. Our research, conducted with the participation of more than 600 students, reveals truths about the state of the environment and validates the importance of civic action for its rehabilitation. Other Programs-Economy and encounters programs. Along with our partners Amizade ("friendship" in Portuguese), we coordinate programs for universities and groups from the U.S. that offer a service experience and cultural exchange in Puerto Rico. Among this year's participants are: the University of Illinois, Idaho University, Lead NY, and the Academy for Global Citizenship. These programs support our projects as well as raise awareness about community efforts.
