Program areas at Chesapeake Search and Rescue Dog Association
Chesapeake Search dogs (csd) ensures that a professionally trained all volunteer k-9 Search, Rescue, disaster and cadaver evidence recovery service is available to law enforcement, fire service and emergency management agencies within the Chesapeake bay region and southern Pennsylvania to Search for lost or missing persons 24/7/365 at no charge. Canine and human team members undergo approximately 8,000-10,000 hours of training annually, which, combined with the dogs' natural keen sense of smell and love of the "work", goes a long way toward increasing the chance of a successful find. Csd has 9 canines certified for air scent, 6 canines certified in human remains detection on land, 3 canines certified in human remains detection in water, and 3 canines certified in crime scenes. Csd currently has 6 canine handlers in training, 6 canine candidates in training for air scent, 3 canine candidates in training for human remains detection on land, and 6 flankers in training.
Chesapeake Search dogs (csd) values and promotes education, safety and awareness to the general public, in addition to providing support for Search and Rescue resources within our response area. We are available to: (1) provide interactive demonstrations and lectures about our mission and services to businesses, schools, scout troops, clubs (e.g., 4h, rotary, kiwanis, american legion, etc. ), fairs, and similar events and organizations; (2) educate children about being prepared in the woods, what to do if they become lost, and how to approach dogs; and (3) provide opportunities for graduating high school seniors to fulfill community service hours. Csd was limited in the number of demos performed during 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic.
