Program areas at Chicago Volunteer Doulas
The traditional model doula program allows doulas to meet with moms prenatally, attend labor and birth, and provide a postpartum follow-up visit. Families served are from moderate to low income families.
Peer doulas support their pregnant peers who are incarcerated during the difficult prenatal and postpartum experience in prison to reduce feelings of isolation and to increase a sense of agency during such a vulnerable, yet powerful stage in their lives. Additionally, this program serves as potential workforce development as peer doulas are receiving marketable skills that they can rely on upon release.
Postpartum Doula Program - Doulas provide up to 20 hours of care within the first 12 weeks after a birth. Services include support with infant feeding, light housework, baby care basics, light meal prep, and postpartum self-care.
