Program areas at Childrens Literacy Project
Tutor support: the Childrens Literacy Project training coordinator (tc) provides ongoing support to clp-trained tutors working with individual students throughout their engagement. The tc conducts an initial check in one month following a tutors placement, checking in again with each tutor in early december to determine continuation of service and again at the end of the school year to assess progress and interest in continuing to provide tutoring in the coming year. The clp training coordinator is also available throughout the tutoring assignment to answer questions, or provide guidance, in regard to the volunteers assignment.
High school tutor training program: during the academic year, 22 seniors at durham academy in durham, nc were trained as Literacy tutors. The students served as tutors for struggling elementary school children for most of the academic year. The training for students contains the same methodological instruction as the adult training
Programs for adults: as we continue to make our training more accessible to a wider variety of volunteers, the Project has shifted its training program into a new training format that consists mostly of asynchronous and self-paced virtual modules. Volunteer tutors meet in person at the end of training to review tutor policies and agreements. All volunteers are trained using Childrens Literacy projects research-based methodology to help disadvantaged children attending nc public schools improve Literacy skills.
