Program areas at Chincoteague Cultural Alliance
CCA's annual plein air event involves more than 50 artists who paint outdoors on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands for a week leading up to an exhibit, reception and sale of their works. The event provides an opportunity for artists to create and display their work, and an opportunity for residents to observe artists at work and see their community through the artists' eyes. Approximately 350 people attend the event.
The Chincoteague Island Farmers and Artisans Market (weekly in spring and fall, bi-weekly in summer), the Second Saturday Artful Flea (monthly from May-October), and the annual Holly Day Market in November are CCA programs that offer public exposure to artists and craftspeople, both professional and amateur, and offer residents and visitors opportunities to view and purchase handmade arts and crafts. Approximately 200 artists/craftspeople participate and more than 5000 people attend these events.
The Chincoteague Island Theatre Company is a CCA program that gives the community the opportunity to see multiple theatrical productions each year and individual community members the chance to participate as actors, set designers, stagehands and other volunteer roles. In addition, in 2016, CITC held a week-long summer camp that taught young people the basics of producing a play. Approximately 50 individuals were actively involved and more than 500 attended CITC productions.
Additional CCA Program Services in 2016 were Classes and Summer Camps; the Second Saturday Art Stroll; the Kitchen Gallery; the Island Coffeehouse; the biannual Chamber Music Concert; the Storytelling Guild; the annual Photo Contest; free concerts, films, and theatre in the park; and scholarships for Chincoteague High School graduates.
