Program areas at The City Tutors
City Tutors program - The City Tutors provides free tutoring services with flexible days and hours to build transferable and technical skills at the cross section of students' academic interests and employment aspirations. Volunteer tutors can commit to a minimum of 5 hours of tutoring during a month or commit to 3 hours a week for 15 weeks. We match tutors and tutees through The City Hub, our automatic matching and data tracking system. The system allows us to measure progress and scale our flagship City Tutors program to serve all boroughs. In 2022 we provided 1,000 hours of tutoring support and we supported 400-500 students, working with middle school, high school, and college learners; and adults returning to earn their high school equivalency. We work in partnership with non-profits in communities where students live. We supported ages 5 to 65+. We track data on the students' progress, growth, and areas where more support may be needed.
City Mentors Program - This program is a first-of-its-kind New York citywide resource connecting City University of New York students and alumni to industry insiders who can provide professional document development and career exploration support. The program provides career mentoring services free of charge to those who need it. City Mentors Program connects applicants with industry people with expertise in the applicant's area of interest. In 2022, City Tutors facilitated over 1,000 self-paced mentorships for a total of over 2,000 sessions. We also ran 27 single day mentorship events in partnership with companies across finance, tech, media, and law industries, with nearly 1300 learners attending those events. 65% of the CUNY students that use our 1:1 self-paced service have never received any type of professional development support. 85% of our mentees have never worked 1:1 with someone on their professional development. For many, we are their first point of contact for professional development. Over 50% of mentees identify what they want to do, and 65% identify concrete next steps in their career plan after just 2 sessions of mentorship. For those seeking employment in their chosen field, over 35% of mentees secure at least an interview after just 3 sessions of mentorship. The City Tutors helps interested and supportive organizations facilitate mentoring events. All events are hosted & emceed by CT. These events are intended for their employees with a want to give back to both the community and the next generation to participate program in a group setting. Events are also aimed at encouraging their employees with a predilection to do so, to participate in The City Tutors Mentors program as a volunteer mentor. Events can be in-person or virtual and typically involve 40-80 total participants with 2-3 mentors and mentees per break out room.
