Program areas at Civil Rights Corps

Crc is best known for its litigation, which challenges the routine practices that enable mass incarceration, including the near-universal reliance on money bail, the growing use of fines and fees to fund the criminal system, prosecutorial misconduct, and the failure to provide adequate counsel. These practices are both immoral and unconstitutional. Even where our litigation is ongoing, we can have an immediate impact. Our litigation has released at least 13,000 people from jail in harris county, Texas cut the jail population in cook county, Illinois by 22 struck down louisianas court funding system on financial conflict of interest grounds and made it possible for more than 291,000 poor tennesseans whose drivers licenses were revoked for nonpayment of court debt or tickets to have their licenses reinstated. We currently have more than 20 cases in active litigation.
