Program areas at Coalition for Engaged Education
C/HOPE was created in 2002 to address the negative cycle of youth incarceration. C/HOPE has served more than 3,000 male probation youth, ages 14-17, at Camp David Gonzales in the Malibu Mountains. Participants attend classes to enhance their education, social skills, and coping skills. Today, C/HOPE assists with reentry into the community through case management so that participants can successfully re-enter school, secure employment, and achieve their personal goals. C/HOPE has reduced the recidivism rate to 20%, which is far below the 70% rate reported by the California Department of Juvenile Justice. Camp David Gonzales closed in 2019 and C/HOPE relocated to Camp Dorathy Kirby in Commerce, where C/HOPE provided life skills classes. After 2020, C/HOPE serves impacted youth with mobile case management throughout LA County.
C/FORWARD provides youth in the foster system support to excel in high school and matriculate from college and into careers. C/FORWARD helps to enroll students into high-quality schools that fit their needs and provides financial assistance for enrollment fees, academic supplies, and extracurricular activities. C/FORWARD also sponsors extra-curricular activities and provides mentorship and support. Only 54% of foster youth graduate from high school nationally and only 10% attend college. Since 2000, 93% of our students have graduated from high school, 93% of the graduates have enrolled in college, and 70% have completed a post-secondary degree within six years of high school graduation.C/FORWARD provides housing in Santa Monica on 34th Street - The 34th Street apartments provide housing to our most deserving emancipated adult foster female clients, for up to 8 emancipated foster women attending school to allow them to make the first steps toward developing a self-sufficient lifestyle. The accommodations enable our justice-impacted and foster youth to pursue their studies at local colleges and to prepare them for life after the program. The housing program is a 2-year rent free shared living arrangement in a complex only for foster women.
