Description
Community Cycles educates and advocates for the use of bicycles as an affordable, viable, sustainable means of transportation. Its in-house educational program teaches people how to repair bikes by stripping and refurbishing donated bikes which are either recycled or sold to support bicycle commuting in the community. During Walk and Bike Month, it encourages people to try out bicycling as a means of commuting to work, partnering with local businesses to hold events almost every day throughout June. In 2022, the non-profit had approximately 8,500 participants in Boulder, CO.

Program areas at Community Cycles

Educational and Retail Shop: Our in-house educational program teaches people how to repair bikes. The students strip and refurbish donated bikes which we either recycle or sell to support bicycle commuting in our community. At the end of the program, the students build and take home a bike. During 2023, we received 5,015 donated bikes, recycled 2,675 bicycles, refurbished and sold 1,368 bicycles, and gave away 722 bikes. In addition, these used bike parts, shop tools, mechanics, and instructors help our members to maintain their own bicycles.
Walk and Bike Month: During Walk and Bike Month, we encourage people to try out bicycling as a means of commuting to work. For 2023, we had approximately 6,500 participants and held 7 "signature" large events during the month of june. One of our large events - a bike ride in partnership with the City of Boulder- was unfortunately rained out.
Outreach and Bike Ambassadors: Our outreach program serves to educate and encourage potential new bicyclists and to advocate bicycles as a safe and viable means of primary transportation. We hold in-house workshops, attend and hold events, hold classes at employer sites and schools, send newsletters, etc., to accomplish this.
