Program areas at CILC
CILC provided pro bono legal representation to low income Dane County individuals at risk of deportation. CILC opened 26 new cases in 2022. In addition, CILC provided assistance to asylum seekers in filing their asylum and work permit applications pro se. Thirty-two asylum applications were filed through our pro se clinic. CILC also developed a program to recruit, train, and support volunteer attorneys willing to assist Afghan evacuees in obtaining immigration relief.
CILC provided informed speakers to local groups (such as churches, schools, and advocacy organizations) interested in learning about and discussing current immigration issues affecting our community. Speakers included CILC-employed staff attorneys and non-employee volunteer attorneys from the Madison area, including CILC board members. CILC made an estimated eight presentations in 2022, including radio program outreach.
CILC provided free clinics allowing members of the public to consult one-on-one with an immigration attorney on immigration-related legal issues and to be referred to a local immigration attorney where appropriate. Clinics were conducted on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month. In 2022, CILC's clinics provided consultation to an estimated 305 individuals, families, and students. CILC maintained a list of volunteer attorneys who rotated participation at the Friday clinics and a separate list of attorneys willing to accept referrals.
