The Corolla Wild Horse Fund provides herd management of the Wild horses in an effort to retain the horses' Wild lifestyle while protecting them and their home range. As guardians of the herd, the Fund responds 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to all emergency calls. Observation and collection of data on each Wild Horse requires many hours in the field studying them and documenting their sightings, the horses' conditions and dynamics, and their habitat usage. The Fund also maintains the fences that border the south and north ends of their habitat area as part of this management. Severely injured or habituated horses may require removal from the Wild. The Fund maintains a 31-acre rescue farm that is well equipped to comfortably house mustangs at all stages of rehabilitation. Rescued horses receive specialized veterinary care for several weeks to several months. During this time, the rescued Horse is worked with to adapt and adjust to human contact and a new diet. Once strong and healthy, a rescued Horse is gentled and trained. If it is appropriate for the particular rescued Horse, the Fund enrolls the Horse into its adoption program. The Fund operates an educational center and gift shop open year-round to provide information and raise awareness about this highly threatened breed, emphasizing their historical and cultural significance. The Fund's educational program includes speaking engagements as well as community outreach events.
