Program areas at Council of Chief State School Officers
Ccsso actively supported Chief State School Officers and their agencies to serve students and educators. We engage leaders through convenings, regular calls focused on their professional growth, and one-to-one outreach. On our annual member survey this year, 95 percent of chiefs and deputies indicated they are satisfied with their membership. In 2023, ccsso focused on supporting states in administering elementary and secondary School emergency relief (esser) and other federal education funds, including in evaluating esser-funded investments to determine how to sustain high-impact programs and supports after esser funds sunset in september 2024. Ccsso's covid relief data project continued to document how states are investing and measuring the impact of federal one-time funding appropriated to State education agencies through esser. In march 2023, ccsso hosted an event showcasing how State esser investments are improving academics, wellbeing, teacher retention and digital learning. The event brought together nearly 400 participants in-person and online. Over the year, ccsso also published six reports to highlight promising State recovery investments in high-impact tutoring, teacher recruitment, out-of-school time learning and more. For the second year, ccsso facilitated the coalition to advance future student success, a group of 12 leading education organizations that continued working together to ensure the effective and equitable use of covid relief funds and telling stories of impact. In march, the coalition published a resource to share guidance about how states can utilize federal relief funding to expand School medicaid to support student mental health. In may 2023, the coalition hosted a virtual event titled the esser impact showcase that was attended by over 175 people. In 2023, ccsso released the report imagining more: how State education agencies can modernize the k-12 education system to put student learning at the center, which outlined actions State education agencies can take to modernize k-12 education systems to center student learning.the reportfollowed a summit convened by ccsso in april 2023to elevate the urgency and momentum for pursuing innovative, student-centered education models.
