Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7, high-quality text-based mental health support and Crisis intervention by empowering a community of trained volunteers and paid supervisors to support people in their moments of need. Anyone can Text from anywhere in the united states, anytime. A live, trained Crisis counselor receives the Text and responds from a secure online platform. Crisis Text Line recruits, trains, develops, and retains volunteers to appropriately communicate with and serve all communities throughout the entire country. Supervisors support and oversee the volunteer Crisis counselor and all texts on the Crisis Text Line platform in real time. In 2023, people in Crisis initiated more than 1.3 million conversations and exchanged nearly 35 million individual messages with Crisis Text Line. An estimated 65% of texters in 2023 did not have anyone else to reach out to.
Crisis Text Line has a dedicated team of research scientists that lead rigorous mental health research efforts to evidence and amplify Crisis Text Line impact for texters, volunteers, and communities. Crisis Text Line research and impact studies aim to strengthen mental health policy, practice, and systems in the broader field nationally and globally. In 2023, Crisis Text Line released several important reports, including:a 10-year impact report, summarizing Crisis Text Line's impact on texters, volunteers, and society over the organization's first decade since 2013volunteer voices, on the impact of volunteering as a Crisis counselor with Crisis Text linecrisis Text Line's 4th annual united in empathy report, with insights on key mental health trends in 2022, as well as insights on individual states and demographic populations.research reports and published studies are published and shared publicly at: httpscrisistextlineorgresearchimp...
Crisis Text Line's mission relies on innovative technology to support the 24/7 texting and chat mental health Crisis intervention platform. The technology team is responsible for coding, refining, and supporting the Crisis Text Line texting and chat platform as well as maintaining and updating a learning management system as part of the platform. The team's role includes engineering, product, design, data, and analytics. In 2023, Crisis Text Line launched the first crisis-response service of its kind in the united states, providing free, 24/7 support for spanish speakers. This planning, development and implementation from the engineering, product, and technology team was paramount to this launch. In 2023, Crisis Text Line began development on a new architecture design for the platform as well as testing and developing a generative ai conversation simulator to improve training for volunteers.
