Program areas at Daughters of Sarah Jewish Foundation
The organization's goal - to support, enrich and enhance programs and services for the well and infirm elderly - is accomplished by issuing grants to the Daughters of Sarah nursing & rehabilitation center. Grants to the nursing center provide for direct nursing and personal care to infirm nursing home residents. It is estimated that 54% of the residents are indigent, with the cost of their care being paid for by medicaid (which does not provide reimbursement to cover the actual cost of resident care). This grant also helps underwrite the costs of providing kosher food in keeping with Jewish dietary laws; in providing a rabbi for pastoral counseling, Jewish programming, and for Jewish holiday worship services; and for providing entertainment and activities programming. In addition, the organization conducts an annual fund-raising campaign (the "annual fund") throughout the year, as well as a series of low key, targeted fundraising efforts surrounding the occurrence of certain Jewish holidays. It hosts an annual signature fundraising social event for the public at a local museum, generally in november, for which it solicits corporate and individual sponsorships. The organization also hosts an annual social event during the summer to celebrate its leadership donors. The organization further coordinates the operation of "sarah's corner", a gift shop for the enjoyment of the residents, guests and staff of Daughters of Sarah community for seniors, which shop is located in the Daughters of Sarah nursing & rehabilitation center. The result of these activities is to improve the lives of the community's residents, to elevate the communal awareness of the Daughters of Sarah community for seniors, to educate the community as to the programs and services provided to the seniors we serve, to create and strengthen a support base of individuals who will donate to, and publicly advocate for, the community for seniors, and to raise funds to support the organization's operations and mission.
The organization has provided funding to support the enhancement of resident focused services at the Daughters of Sarah nursing & rehabilitation center, such as: (a) grants for a tuition reimbursement program to reimburse tuition costs expended by staff seeking to improve their skills and knowledge for the betterment of resident care by procuring additional professional degrees (lpn, rn, msw, etc); (b) grants to improve the technological offerings available to residents, including upgrades to equipment to foster and enhance resident communication and (to address needs made apparent by covid) to expand resident in-room experiences; (c) funding for a program to help alleviate staffing shortages by hiring potential nursing aide trainees, providing these economically disadvantaged persons lacking healthcare skills with gainful employment and on-site training to qualify for nursing aide certification at no cost to the employee, along with continued employment once certified. This program enables them to meet their daily living expenses while studying, improve their marketable skills, and ensure the prospect of continued employment.
The organization's goal - to support, enrich and enhance programs and services for the well and infirm elderly - is accomplished by issuing grants to the Daughters of Sarah housing company to provide housing scholarships that subvent the cost of residency at the Daughters of Sarah housing company's assisted living residence. This grant enables needy individuals, unable to pay the full cost of care, to receive the level of personal care assistance they need to carry out their regular activities of daily living and to remain in a least restrictive environment for their personal care needs, where they can receive kosher meals in accordance with Jewish dietary laws and programming, entertainment and activities in keeping with their cognitive skill level and based on Jewish traditions. Grants have also established a lifelong educational learning program, bringing rabbis and college professors to present courses on Jewish cultural, religious, historical and political topics.
