Program areas at Demand Justice
Following Justice stephen breyers retirement from the supreme court in early 2022, Demand Justice advocated for ketanji brown jacksons nomination to the court and eventual confirmation. Justice jacksons confirmation was historic making her both the first black woman and first public defender supreme court Justice. Demand Justice carried out activities including organizing support from the legal and public defender communities and running advertisements. We also brought law students and public defenders to Washington d.c. during Justice jacksons hearings before the senate judiciary committee.
Demand Justice is committed to recruiting and advocating for professionally diverse lawyers to serve as federal judges. Demand Justice works to identify and support a diverse pipeline of talent for nomination to the federal bench and, once they are nominated, Demand Justice carries out activities to ensure these nominees are successfully confirmed.
Demand Justice has played a lead role in building support for court reform proposals. Since the introduction of the judiciary act in april 2021, Demand Justice has organized more than 125 constituent meetings urging members of congress to support this piece of legislation these meetings have drawn participation from more than 1,500 volunteers. We have also hosted virtual and in-person events devoted to raising awareness and building support for the judiciary act and other reform proposals.
