Program areas at Do the Write Thing Foundation of DC
Dtwt conducted after-school programs at ballou hs and kelly miller ms that included poetry workshops for high-school and middle school students culminating in publication of poems by middle grade and high school poets and a virtual youth town hall in which students helped produce zoom video productions addressing social issues like racism, violence, and economic inequality. High school students had the opportunity to discuss the issues during a live radio broadcast with denise rolark barnes from the informer newspaper. Sessions began in january and continued to the end of the year. Elementary students participated in an after-school program that included entrepreneurship, making robots and growing plants in water at ketcham elementary school during the spring semester. the project ended with an outdoor festival during which students sold their products to parents and staff.

During summer 2022, Do the Write Thing of DC served 100 high school students accross 3 multimedua programs that culminated in them producing three virtual town hall events addressing racism, violence, economic inequality and prison reform. Adult gues panelists included DC's assistant chief of police, local media celebrities from fox news and wpgc radio station, the deputy mayor for education, and the special counsel for the office of the attorney general of DC. Elementary youth participated in a 5-week summer program that included entrepreneurship, making robots. And growing plants in water at the martin luther king elementary school that also engaged children in listening to stories being read by local writers and readers.
