PROJECT GULU-FAMILY CARE, UGANDA: The Family Care Uganda Primary school has 198 boarding with 34 younger ones commuting from their close-by homes. FCU targets extremely disadvantaged young people from the Acholi tribe, where many of their parents or guardians are recovering child soldiers, the Ik tribe who are extremely isolated hunters and gatherers and the Nuer tribe who are all refugees from South Sudan. Project Uganda has continued to face many challenges this year, a main one being finding affordable food to feed all their students. Several government and private schools near them were forced to close 5 weeks early being unable to feed their students, because untimely rains spoiled crops causing food shortages. Activated Ministries was able to grant scholarships to 36 students so they could continue with their studies at both high school and university levels in 11 different institutions. With the challenges of a 3rd world education system and often having exam dates and results delayed or withheld it took s a lot of effort to get all the necessary paperwork and funds to each of these students to get them enrolled in time. Project Uganda team has worked tirelessly thoroughly the months of January and February to make it possible. Activated Ministries also continued to assist Robin Yamaguchi with her travel expenses this year as she travels between Australia and Uganda to manage her health care and retirement plan while continuing to train future leadership for Project Uganda. AM also sponsored a fundraising trip to the US in May of 2023, where Robin visited individual donors, churches and non-profit organizations in 5 different cities updating them on Project Ugandas progress and continued challenges. TURKEY/SYRIA EARTHQUAKE: Turkey and Syria experienced multiple earthquakes on February 6th and then again on February 20th, which resulted in varying degrees of devastation in over ten large cities, as well as numerous smaller towns and villages. Whole towns and villages were completely destroyed, and Syrian refugees were among those hardest hit by the devastating twin earthquakes. The Safe Haven for Refugees team who have been working with Syrian refugees in southern Turkey since 2006 were on the ground when the earthquakes struck, and Activated Ministries rush emergency funding to the team in the days following the quakes.
