Down the Stretch Ranch acquires retired race horses to provide therapeutic rehabilitation to veterans of war. The ranch cares for these horses daily, rehabilitating them from their racing background. Additionally, they serve the community by offering horseriding outings for military children and those afflicted with anxiety. Down the Stretch Ranch is a sanctuary for retired thoroughbred race horses who are no longer useful in the racing industry, with an average herd size of 28 throughout 2022. The ranch also successfully adopted out 10 horses to loving homes.

Program areas at Down the Stretch Ranch

In 2023 Down the Stretch Ranch continued to grow and achieve its mission to provide sanctuary and rehome off the track Thoroughbred racehorses while utilizing them to provide equine therapy to our active military, veterans, and underprivileged children. The daily average of horses cared for at the ranch was 29. 11 horses were taken in and 8 were adopted out. The ranch feed 70 tons of hay and 8 tons of oats. The horses grazed over 140 acers of land owned by the McCanna's.
In July combat Veteran James Hook moved his family to the ranch to live and work. James, Emako and their 3 children, Roseme 15, Edward 9, and Enzon 8. They left section 8 housing in the worst neighborhood in Spokane to relocate to the ranch. The kids are thriving in school. James has a job and purpose and works at the ranch with pride!
In early spring the ranch hosted 28 active crew members and chiefs of the USS Michigan before they left for a 7-month deployment. They stayed at the ranch for 5 days and each one of them rode a retired racehorse. The ranch was given an honorary flag from the USS Michigan. Throughout the year the ranch hosted over 50 children who suffer from a diverse range of disadvantages. The ranch also hosted over 40 combat veterans who fought in multiple wars.
