Applied Medical Research Inc. (amr), currently d/b/a Dreyfus Health Policy and Research Center, as a 501(c)3 entity, has as its only purpose, benefiting the Health and well-being of all people in the united states of america. Its emphasis is on the maintenance of wellness and the prevention of those common chronic diseases including, but not limited to, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, that lead to chronic kidney disease (ckd) and, ultimately, end-stage renal disease (esrd) or kidney failure, requiring treatment with dialysis and/or kidney transplantation. Kidney disease, as ckd or esrd, currently affects some 40,000,000 americans and is not only very costly in strictly economic terms, but also in relation to various types of human (and family) suffering. Applied Medical Research Inc., as noted above, is committed to maximizing wellness and preventing the most common chronic diseases that lead to kidney disease and the economic cost and human suffering associated with it. To achieve that end, amr is developing and testing (in real-life situations) comprehensive and rigorous community-level models of Health optimization and artificial-intelligence-based risk stratification algorithms that can identify those individuals most at risk. This enables referral for appropriate interventions to treat the underlying conditions and thus prevent kidney disease and the enormous adverse Medical and human consequences associated with it. A central principle of this effort is the conviction that total (true) Health is a product of the degree of functionality or dysfunctionality of particular communities, so that truly effective efforts must be multi-functional and involve the communities themselves as the drivers and leaders. Amr's current effort is ongoing in east new york, brooklyn, an underserved community of new york city. Based on the success achieved to date, active planning to extend the model to other underserved communities in the united states is being carried, out in partnership with amr-affiliate and parent dialysis clinic Inc., which has kidney-disease treatment (dialysis) facilities in twenty-eight states and three organ procurement organizations (middle Tennessee, new mexico, and northern California.
