Program areas at Elder Services

Elder Services provides both congregate dining and home delivery of meals through meals on wheels program. Home delivered meals are delivered primarily by volunteers and staff that also check on recipients five days a week within city limits and twice monthly to rural clients in four counties, these volunteers and staff bring concerns about the seniors' condition to esi personnel who check on the senior and emergency contacts as necessary. The nutrition program served over 107,000 meals for the year to recipients who qualify to receive meals under the older americans act, medicaid or low cost private pay meals. Meals were served in a variety of settings and locations including: meals on wheels delivery to the homebound;congregate dining sites in Iowa city; and rural outreach throughout johnson, Iowa, cedar, and Washington counties. Included in the total were 57,700 home delivered meals to some of the frailest of clients.
The retired & senior volunteer program (rsvp), a nationwide federal program of the corporation for national and community Services. Rsvp volunteers are 55+, recruited and placed in volunteer positions that meet critical community needs that serve youth, elders and non-profit organizations. Volunteer activity is monitored and measured for impact on the population served. Volunteerism is key to productive aging and contributes to prolonging the lifespan of retirees. In the year ended june 30,2018, approximately 496 rsvp volunteers provided 31,000 hours of service hours in the four counties to many non-profit organizations, schools and police departments. Volunteers provided academic support to students in schools, provided medical transportation, assisted with food banks, delivered meals, and assisted courts and hospitals, including the university of Iowa hospitals and clinics.
Elder Services inc.(esi) support caregivers of seniors though the caregiver counseling program and general information and referral which provides information about resources available in the community, and in the case of our contract with the university of Iowa, research into resources available to their emmployees is done nationwide.
