Kindness to prevent blindness: good vision is essential for students of all ages to reach their full academic potential. Studies show behavior problems go down and academic success goes up when children have corrected vision. In collaboration with boling vision center, this initiative is designed to ensure success in Education through accurate eyesight supported by school visits from a mobile vision unit offering check-ups and supplemental eyewear for students in need. Number of persons benefited: 1,256 from january - july
Schoolhouse supply store:elkhart community schools (ecs) teachers report spending over $1,000 a year of their own money on school supplies and personal hygiene products for their students. Regardless of their ability to pay, all students deserve the opportunity for success in the classroom. We must level the playing field and ensure that every student is equipped with the necessary supplies to thrive. Exceptional educational experiences start with having the right tools. The Elkhart Education Foundation (eef) stocks and maintains a schoolhouse supply "store" for the benefit of students attending ecs. From august through april, ecs administrators, teachers, paras, counselors, social workers, and bus drivers have access to the tools that will help students succeed both in and outside of the classroom. Staff do not have to pay a single cent. Ecs faculty & staff can place their orders online and have the supplies shipped directly to them in their school buildings: 140 unique customers.
Summerscape day camp: the 2022 summerscape day camp program offered full-day grades k-6 during summer vacation. Our themed week-long camps are led by certified Elkhart community schools teachers and assisted by qualified high school and college students. Some of the best learning happens outside of the classroom on field trips, experiencing nature, exploring living history and through hands-on, project based lessons. Number of persons benefited: 480 unique students over 6 weeks (each month an average of 300 students)
