Description
Defend Our Health envisions a world where everyone has equal access to safe food and drinking water, healthy homes, and products that are toxic-free and climate-friendly. We stand up for this right wherever it is threatened. In 2021, we collaborated with farmers and well-users in Maine to address the PFAS contamination crisis, developing innovative policy solutions to combat toxic chemicals. We championed policies that made Maine a national leader in the effort.

Program areas at Defend Our Health

We published a major national report of plastic bottles that exposed the severe health hazards and enviromental racism across the manufacturing supply chain of PET plastic. We advocated for two federal regulatory actions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to detoxify plastics. We've negotiated with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and drafted an amendment that would harmonize the 2021 Maine law regarding sales of consumer products containing PFAS with other states and Europe to lessen the reporting burden on industry while preserving the core mandates of the law. In Portland and Lewiston, Maine, we have worked with the Rwandan Community Association of Maine to train recent immigrants on identifying and correcting environmental health hazards in rental housing, including exposure to lead paint dust and black mold.
