Program areas at Equality of Opportunity Foundation
Matchmaking for students and schools. This involved providing services to match innercity students to elite independent schools in the greater boston area. Liaising with families and admissions directors and hosting admissions events. For example, the Foundation hosted events between families who attend early childhood centers in roxbury, dorchester, and mattapan, and admissions coordinators from elite independent schools in cambridge, lexington, and weston. The Foundation then assisted families in the application process and used data from the schools and districts across the area to ensure the matches were as rigorous as possible. Expenses associated with these activities included modest travel expenses, space to host events, and staff time to analyze data and interface with families and admissions personnel.
Data collection and analysis. The Foundation collected and analyzized data from schools, school districts, and non-profit organizations in order to forge the rigorous matches described above. For example, the Foundation collected and analyzized admissions data from an independent school in the boston area and shared the results with families who were interested in attending the school.
More broadly, in order to call attention to the breadth and depth of racial inequality in america, the Foundation collected national data and regularly released to the public reports that showed a wide swath of indicators in an easily digestible form. For example, the Foundation released a report that distilled recent scholarships on the attributes that are most highly correlated with escaping poverty. Expenses associated with these activities included travel expenses as well as licensing fees for the use of data.
