Evacuspots is part of the public city-assisted evacuation, utilized in a category-3 storm or higher. Led by evacuteer, the first phase of the project took place in 2012-2013, and installed seventeen 14-foot-tall statues at each of the locations for pick-up in the event of a mandatory evacuation in new orleans. The project is one of the first to utilize public art as an emergency management function, and serves as a model for preparedness solutions. In partnership with the arts council of new orleans, city of new orleans, and sponsored by private corporations and donors, the project is a prime example of private-public partnership success. The second phase of the evacuspots project took place over the course of 2015. On june 1,2015 evacuteer launched love, write, light, a fundraising campaign and online platform that invited people to reflect on their love for new orleans, write their love note to new orleans, and donate to help light the evacuspots. In order to increase access and awareness of the program furthermore, the evacuspots lighting will allow the statues to be seen at night and ensure better visibility of the sculptures and lead to a ripple effect to larger discussion of their purpose.
Evacuteer training program:evacuteer trained 585 volunteers on city-assisted evacuation, a program that allows all evacuees who cannot otherwise self-evacuate to be registered and assisted by volunteers who ensure a smoother process for safe evacuation. The program runs for 24 hours from 54-30 hours ahead of a storm. Approximately 35,000 new orleanians are expected to use this process. In order to reach the goal of having one evacuteer to assist per 60 evacuees, evacuteer conducted over 58 training sessions and conducted six simultaneous trainings for the katrina day of service, a city-wide event commemorating the 10th anniversary, obtaining 110 new volunteers in one morning.
Evacuteer partner program: by working with existing local community groups, non-profits and trusted faith-based organizations, evacuteer works with trusted partners in order to communicate and mirror the population they serve. In 2015, they officially partnered with 18 groups, performed 153 hours of direct outreach, and served nearly 2,000 members of the target population.
Evacukids:through six one-hour lesson modules designed for students in grades 3-5, evacukids offers practical lessons relevant to living on the Mississippi gulf coast. Topics include Louisiana climate, coping with natural hazards, and emergency preparedness. Evacukids curriculum also combats the low literacy rate in new orleans by integrating spelling, writing, and reading comprehension enrichment activities into fun, hands-on experiments. In 2015, we reached over 1,000 students to date.
