Program areas at Exposure Skate
Exposure Skate's youth program called "Skate rising" a free series of classes and camps for girls age 4-16 were offered throughout 2023. Each class consisted of three parts: education, community service and skateboarding. Each session begins with a "teaching moment" during which a guest speaker addresses a need in the community such as support for the homeless, refugees or victims of abuse. Afterwards, students participate in a community service project designed to alleviate that need such as making bracelets for victims of bullying, making activity kits for children at the local hospital or hygiene kits for the homeless.lastly, girls work with professional and olympic skateboarders to develop confidence and new skills through skateboarding. Each coach is certified through the center for healing justice through sport, doc wayne and adidas' "keeping girls in sport" to ensure he or she is equipped to discuss mental health and sensitive topics with participants.exposure's sesh(e) program to teaches women, trans and nonbinary individuals 16 + how to skateboard in a safe and welcoming environment in exchange for a donation of canned food, blankets, shoes and jackets for the local domestic violence shelter. Our programs director jess robledo became certified in domestic violence advocacy to further her ability to teach women about healthy relationships.exposure continued the scholarship program in 2023 in which we partnered with the college skateboarding educational foundation to support two $5,000 college scholarships for women, trans and nonbinary skateboarders who give back to their communities.
Our flagship Exposure event brought 200 women, trans, and nonbinary skaters from 18 countries together to share in empowerment and to raise money for survivors of domestic violence. The event served 3,000 attendees and featured pro and amateur competitions, a documentary screening, live music, and a presentation about the prevalence of domestic violence in our community. We reached an audience of 5.3 million through various platforms and media partnerships.
