Program areas at Family Ymca of the Glens Falls Area

the y is recognized nationally as a leading community service organization, emphasizing on providing programs and services that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. As a result over 7,000 people in our community are receiving the support, guidance, financial support and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind, and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance, and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are accessible, affordable, and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. We provided scholarship assistance to people who otherwise would have faced economic barriers to participation. Our partnerships with secondary medicare insurance carriers and the greater Glens Falls senior citizens center provide seniors the opportunity to live healthier, active lifestyles, as well as provides a social outlet for these individuals. Through a collaboration with Glens Falls hospital and the cr wood cancer center, our forever strong program gives cancer survivors and their families regain their strength and quality of life after treatment.
Our Ymca believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs for over 130 years. Y programs, such as parenting, military Family memberships, splash week, and the village green programs, are examples of how we deliver training, resources, and support that empower our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps, and overcome obstacles. We engaged Ymca members, participants, and volunteers in activities that strengthen our community and pave the way for future generations to thrive.
Our Ymca is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we help young people cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement. Our Ymca programs, such as camp chepontuc, swim teams, gymnastics teams, leaders' club, and youth & government, offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical, and emotional growth. We offer direct financial assistance that makes participation possible for the young people we engage. Our scholarship assistance program helped youth participate in ongoing youth programs, and children have an enriching summer camp experience. Our youth & government program is a collaboration with the queensbury unified school district and provides teens with awareness of political issues and procedures as well as developing leadership and communication skills. This club meets regularly to research and develop their own bills or court cases in preparation for a state conference in albany, ny. Through a collaboration with Glens Falls city school district we implemented a no more learning gap program which focused on the reading comprehension loss that takes place each summer throughout the country and our district. Some students maintained their reading level and more than half increased their reading level by one book level or more.
