Program areas at Feeding Pennsylvania
Increase access to healthy food: Feeding pa works with farmers and processors to increase access to healthy food for our food banks and the neighbors they serve through three critical agricultural programs. The mid-atlantic regional cooperative partners with farmers, wholesalers and importers to distribute fresh produce to food banks across the mid-atlantic region. Fill a glass with hope is a charitable fresh milk program that raises money for food banks to purchase fresh milk from local dairies. In july 2020, Feeding pa became the contractor for the Pennsylvania agricultural surplus system, which helps to reduce food waste, support local farms, and distribute nutritious agricultural products to pennsylvanians at risk of hunger.
Collaboration: Feeding Pennsylvania provides a strong, collective voice for hunger-relief across the state. We advocate for federal and state policies, programs, and initiatives to improve food access and relieve hunger. Feeding Pennsylvania's members work in response to disasters in cooperation with the Feeding america network as well as within the commonwealth in collaboration with state agencies where food resources are needed. Covid-19 activated this work statewide to respond to the increase in need and advocate for policies to support distribution of more food.
Nutrition education: Feeding Pennsylvania created a healthy pantry initiative in partnership with the Pennsylvania department of health. A dedicated registered dietician is responsible for the program's curriculum and working with food pantries and the food banks to increase their healthy food inventory while also providing nutrition information for the clients they serve.
