Program areas at Florida Consumer Action Network Foundation
Complete Streets Project - FCAN Foundation funded education of the public and decision makers on the Complete Streets concept which are streets designed for all road users, including people on foot, on bike or taking transit and can help address transportation and public health problems in St. Petersburg. We held "walk audits" with community members to illustrate problems and solutions in key areas, held bike rides to show examples of better conditions for cyclists, participated in numerous meetings and hearings on transportation, and set up a "parklet" as part of the city's Open Streets day, to show alternative uses for streets.
Auto Insurance research and education - FCAN Foundation sponsored research into rates used by zip codes, with variables including employment, education, and other factors to see how insurers were rating good drivers. Our goal is greater understanding of insurance and better insurance rates for lower and middle income good drivers.
Why Courts Matter - This project focused on problems with courts not having personnel or resources and why that is important to Floridians. We feel many people lack understanding of court processes and how they affect everyday life. We funded work including news events and educational forums.
Consumer Issues Project: FCAN Foundation funded work on consumer issues including insurance, the courts, civic engagement, and health care. Specifically, the work focused on lower insurance rates, improving public understanding of the court system and filling vacancies, and increasing understanding of our electoral and legislative systems and how citizens participate. FCAN Foundation encouraged citizen participation and trained citizens to be more involved in civic processes.
