Program areas at Food for People

Food for People's Food distribution services include several inanities to provide hunger relief services in humboldt county. The pantry network that provides Food for 18 pantries and three congregate meal programs (soup kitchens) throughout humboldt county. The choice pantry serves individuals and households living in the greater eureka area using the choice style of Food distribution which invites People to select the foods they want and that fit their dietary or cultural needs. The mobile produce pantry takes a refrigerated truck full of fresh fruits and vegetables to specific locations across humboldt county for distribution on a monthly schedule. The free produce markets provide seasonal free farmers' market-style produce distributions for low- income individuals and families. The nonprofit network allows local nonprofit organizations serving low-income children and/or adults to access donated foods at a low, per pound cost established by feeding america. The emergency and community Food response program works with community partners throughout humboldt county to make Food available to households experiencing hardships due to natural disasters including wildfires, earthquakes, winter storms and more. Overhead and labor associated with receiving, transportation, and logistics of the distribution programs; including tracking costs for Food donated at commodity prices is done by the organization's warehouse.
Food for People's community outreach services aim to engage clients and community members by providing tools and resources to eliminate hunger and create a healthy community. The calfresh outreach programs help households apply and recertify for calfresh. The nutrition education program offers cooking videos, cooking demos, taste tests, and recipes to encourage People to eat healthy on a budget. The advocacy program works with partners throughout the state to identify policies, programs and legislation that reduce hunger and poverty at the local, state and federal levels. The local Food resources program identifies and diverts local foods to the Food bank for distribution. The gleaning program accesses donations of fresh local produce and meats from commercial farms, orchards, farmers' markets and ranchers. The Food drive program collects nonperishable Food community Food drives and events.
Food for People operates senior & child nutrition programs specific to populations who are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of hunger and Food insecurity. The commodity supplemental Food program provides a 30-40 pound box of nutritious Food monthly for income-eligible seniors (age 60 and older). All boxes come with the addition of bread and up to 10 lbs of fresh produce. The senior brown bag program has been operating since 1987 and provides a monthly bag of groceries for low income senior households at 16 sites countywide. Drive-through distributions are offered at sites that can accommodate the vehicle traffic. Volunteer drivers deliver to those who are unable to pick up the Food on their own. The homebound delivery program provides a monthly bag of groceries for adults under age 60 who are too ill or disabled to leave their homes. Referrals are accepted from hospitals, medical professionals, social workers, etc. The backpacks for kids program provides a bag of kid-friendly Food every friday during the school year for children who are considered at risk for hunger over the weekend. The kids summer Food program offers weekly Food boxes at six sites in hoopa, willow creek, manila, loleta, bridgeville and redway which are considered more remote and rural areas where resources are less available. The nonperishable foods are accompanied by fresh produce from local farms thanks to our locally delicious farmer fund.
