Program areas at Foundation for Peace
Mission trip programs: we had eight trips in 2022, seven to dominican republic (dr) and one to kenya. There were 101 team members total. In el batey, dr, the community center we built together is being used for vocational training. The public school is using the two new classrooms completed by ffp teams this year. The community leaders have requested a day care center be built so women can safely leave their children while they work. They are also hoping to partner with the government to approve a medical clinic for the area and ffp would fund the construction of the building.in kenya, the new church sanctuary was finished all except for the bathrooms and offices. We finished them and started constructing a new building on the church property to house a kitchen where they will cook food for 400 students studying at tumaini.ffp medical teams in the dr provided medical care for people living in under-served communities. We partnered with local physicians and the national public health department to ensure the best quality care for patients and an experience of joint learning for the teams. We served thousands of patients across many communities. Consultations and medicines were provided free of charge without regard to race, gender, religious affiliation, or nationality.ffp organized a surgical mission in partnership with hernia help at the marcelino velez hospital in santo domingo, dr. hernias and hydroceles were repaired for 42 patients. Patients were identified by ffp medical teams and local partners. The ffp dr staff did all the pre-surgical consultations, lab work, scheduling and public health paperwork. We provided lodging for patients and their family the night before the surgery, transportation, and translation. Their work enabled the team to perform the surgeries free of charge.pathway to dignity program: social justice for undocumented people of haitian origin:this year the program began with a partnership with the haitian consulate in barahona and helped people of haitian descent living in the dr to get necessary haitian documents. Many lacked even a birth certificate (bc) from haiti and this has a profound effect on their lives and their feeling of self-worth. Children cannot get a birth certificate if their mother does not have one, even when born in the dr. In addition, bc's are needed to gain access to education and to get legally married. Birth certificates are a pre-requisite to get a haitian id card. The id card enables a person to get a phone plan, open a bank account to send and receive money and in some cases, get a legitimate job.haitian id cards enable people to apply for haitian passports and ultimately dominican republic visas, allowing them to travel freely in the dr without fear of being summarily deported. In 2022, 778 birth certificates and 371 id cards were obtained through our partnerships. Thousands more of each document are needed.other community activitieshaiti: - we continued to serve the people living in the "handicapped village" (vilaj casimir) with distribution of food, monthly supply of water, and school tuition support. They are located on the northside of port-au-prince.dominican republic:- we continued to work in el batey and batey algodon communities to build and repair homes.
