Foundation for Underwater Research and Education

The Foundation has begun organizing the 13th biannual Submarine Races. This event is a design competition challenge where high school, college and university students, and individuals are required to design, construct, and operate a human poweered submarine. The purpose is to provide student contestants interested in marine technology the opportunity for bright, creative ideas and conceptions to be applied in concert with what they are learning to the real world underwater environment. The race requires that competitors master the principles of buoyancy, propulsion, drag, and life-support for small wet underwater vehicles. Awards are presented for innovation, speed by category propeller or non-propeller, one or two persons, best use of composits materials, quality of their technical report, and overall performance. The bi-annual race week will be held 22 - 26 June 2015.
