Program areas at Friends of Sausal Creek
Field programs & nursery: in the 2022 - 23 fiscal year, fosc led numerous hands-on field trips and classroom visits for over 450 students, native seed hikes and workdays at our native plant nursery, and hundreds of restoration workdays. Volunteers dedicated over 7,700 service hours to the community and the Creek, propagating and planting 3,625 native plants in the watershed. Additional restoration efforts included the removal of invasive, nonnative plants; trash and graffiti removal; and trail maintenance.
Advocacy program: fosc regularly works with city of oakland officials to advocate for the protection and restoration of our environment and natural resources. This fiscal year, we advanced major initiatives aimed at developing master plans for our public parks and protecting rare plants in the watershed.
Education & outreach program: our outreach program includes regular community events led by experts, participation in community-wide events, and the creation of content for numerous social channels, including social media and a newsletter. This fiscal year, fosc held 18 community events, and saw a 15% increase in subscribers and followers across platforms. Throughout the watershed, we maintained two educational native plant demonstration gardens and expanded our outreach efforts in oaklands disadvantaged fruitvale neighborhood, engaging the community in identifying water, park and open space projects.
