Program areas at Friends of SMHS Visual and Performing Arts

Titan Music consists of several groups including Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Winter Drumline and Winter Color Guard and are open to the entire student body in which 300-350 students are involved. The Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Jazz Band perform three formal concerts each year which are open to the public. The award winning Marching Band supports the football program throughout the season in addition to competing in five Southern California field competitions per year. The Orchestra competes in one competition and the award winning Winter Drumline and Color Guard compete in five Southern California Percussion Alliance competitions each year.
Each year the high school produces a musical. Auditions are open to the entire student body. Students participate as either cast members or technical crew. There are six performances and open to other students, faculty, families, friends and the community. The students learn teamwork in addition to theatrical skills (acting, dancing, set building, costuming, and sound and light engineering).
In addition to four levels of drama instruction and one class in stage craft, the Drama Department produces several shows each year including a Fall play, an Advanced Drama play, Advanced Drama Originals (one act plays written and directed by Advanced Drama students with acting auditions open to the entire student body), Comedy Spartz (cometitive improvisational comedy) and 24 Hour Theatre (one act plays written, directed, and acted by students).San Marino Speech and Debate has become one of the top programs and teams in the State. The team boasts over 100 students and is the largest competitive activity on campus. Students compete in more than 20 tournaments every year ranging from debate, to oratorical contests, tests of political knowledge, to competitive acting. The team is ranked the 38th strongest team (top 1.3%) nationally in the National Forensic League, and 8th strongest team (top 3.3%) in California. The annual Showcase is open to the public and attended by other students, faculty, families, friends and the community.Boys Choir and Girls Choir are auditioned ensembles for students who wish to get a better foundation in the art of vocal music. These vocal ensembles perform at 3 major concerts per year. In addition to the regular concert season, they also participate in choral festivals on a local and state level. Chamber Choir is the most advanced vocal ensemble offered. Chamber Singers produce and perform 4 concerts annually. The group also makes guest appearances for many community events and fundraisers. This vocal ensemble regularly earns the highest ratings and receives standing ovations at all the choral festivals. San Marino Chamber Choir also travels nationally and internationally for choir tours during spring break. They are able to work with professional conductors and guest adjudicators throughout the country.San Marino High School offers five levels of visual art including: Art Fundamentals, 3-D Art, Drawing and Painting, Advanced Drawing and Painting and AP Art. Art Fundamentals is open to all students and provides a beginning experience in art, primarily, but not exclusively, two-dimensional. Three-dimensional Art is open to all students and provides a beginning experience in art, primarily, but not exclusively, three-dimensional. Drawing and Painting provides continued investigation of drawing and painting techniques through the use of a variety of media. Advanced Drawing and Painting focuses on creative expression. Students are encouraged to stretch their imagination and communicate their ideas through further exploration of various art media. AP Art provides students with college-level visual arts experience leading to the completion of a portfolio of work.
