Program areas at Fotas / Friends of the Animal Shelter Inc
Transfers--FOTAS organizes transfers to other no-kill shelters for many dogs and cats that cannot find homes in the local community. The transfer program includes an extensive network of volunteers who socialize pets to attract potential adopters and foster pets until they are old enough and healthy enough to transfer. This program is one of the most successful initiatives to increase the live release rate at the shelter. For the last 5 years every adoptable animal at the shelter has been saved. In 2023 FOTAS organized 110 transports and funded transport expenses for 1,302 pets.
Shelter Building--FOTAS provided funds for new equipment signage and decor for the Primary Learning Adoption Wellness and Socialization PAWS building which was substantially completed in 2022. FOTAS also provided equipment for a redesigned shelter intake section and materials to build a roofed connection between the PAWS building and the main shelter building.
Shelter and Community Needs--FOTAS supplements the county shelter's budget by funding 1 heartworm medicine to save dogs that were euthanized in the past for lack of medical care 2 flea medicines toys leashes pet food supplements and other supplies and 3 medical care for extraordinarily ill or injured animals turned into the shelter each year. FOTAS contracted for technical services to update several web sites with pictures and information about adoptable animals as well as other current pet-related information on a daily basis. For the community FOTAS supplies humane runners dog houses and food for pets belonging to county citizens who cannot afford them. As needed FOTAS also funds TNR surgeries at local veterinarians and surgery assistance when shelter resources are not available.
