Program areas at Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness

See schedule o. "advocacy" - we had big successes in our work against sulfide mining in mn this year. A 20-year moratorium on copper-sulfide mining in the federal lands surrounding the bwca was enacted. We also had a win in the mn supreme court in a case regarding polymet's wastewater permit. "no boundaries to the Boundary Waters" - we reached 6,324 students in classroom visits and had 226 participants on overnight Wilderness canoe trips in the Boundary Waters. That is double the number of canoe trip participants that we had the previous year. We also had 311 day canoe trip participants. Both teacher and student post-experience surveys indicate that classroom visits and trips are impacting students relationship with the outdoors. "thriving communities" - we continued our work building relationships and our presence in the ely, mn community through sponsoring and participating in local events and hosting community events ourselves. Our office is also been used a community meeting space. We continue our work with the us forest service, and, for the first time, contracted Wilderness crew leaders to support volunteer work in the Wilderness.
